Good Harbor. Fully immersed at 9:18 p.m.

Whew! That was close! After a rager of a thunderstorm, I thought my daily swim was off. I slunk back home at 7:30 and pouted--i even cried a little--for my safety, my husband demanded that I stay out of the water. But at 9:00, the clouds parted and I headed back down to the beach. Swim executed.

Port Oneida. Fully immersed at 5:12 p.m.

Today's swim was all about the Sunday drive. In between visits with my two dads, I snuck away for a little adventure. I knew I needed a change of scenery, so I hopped in my car and started driving toward Glen Arbor. And I was absolutely thrilled when my car steered itself onto Basch Road toward the Port Oneida farm--one of my favorite sections of the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. There are a few outlets to the beach itself; the spot I chose was a more rustic section--one with a steep decent to the beach below. When I finally emerged from the deep woods, the view was spectacular.

Good Harbor. Fully immersed at 7:03 p.m.

Friday, June 15th 2012

West Bay, Traverse City. Fully immersed at 7:35 p.m.

Tonight was a night for true water enthusiasts. My dad, sisters Liz and Jess and brother-in-law Chad took my dad's sailboat out on West Bay to celebrate my sister Liz's birthday (one she shares with our other sister, her twin Becca--who couldn't be with us). A party of five, we loaded up a cooler with sandwiches from Mary's Kitchen Port, some special birthday beer and hard cider, a fabulous pumpkin cheesecake from Grand Traverse Pie Co. and headed out on the water for a few hours. Not before a quick jump off the boat, of course!

An undisclosed location, Leland. Fully immersed at 8:24 p.m.

Even locals sometimes find new spots!

Wednesday, June 13th 2012

Good Harbor. Fully immersed at 8:12 p.m.

A beautiful night--warm sun on my shoulders, an almost-empty beach, a complete lack of flies and a few perfect rocks that made it home to my collection.

Tuesday, June 12th 2012

Good Harbor. Fully immersed at 9:55 a.m.

Bodysurfing!  Heck, yes.

Monday, June 11th 2012

Good Harbor. Fully immersed at 7:42 p.m.

So hot today! The novelty isn't even close to wearing off.

Sunday, June 10th 2012

Good Harbor. Fully immersed at 4:27, 5:15 and again at 5:42.

Another absolutely perfect Sunday in Paradise.

Saturday, June 9th 2012

West Bay, Traverse City. Fully immersed at 9:15 p.m.

A friend asked me recently if I would count West Bay as an official swim, or if I only record jumps in Lake Michigan proper. The answer? Totally counts.

Friday, June 8th 2012

Good Harbor. Fully immersed at 7:28 p.m.

Short and sweet: there's rain on the way.

Thursday, June 7th 2012

Good Harbor. Fully immersed at 7:34 p.m.

Tonight was another first for the year: a small group of friends joined me at the beach. After a refreshing swim (temps were in the low 80s today,) we lingered long after--to catch up, to gossip, to sip a few beers and to savor some precious time in the sun.

Wednesday, June 6th 2012

South Beach, Leland. Fully immersed at 7:36 p.m.

Tonight was my husband's first swim of the year--and our first beach night together. The Beach has always been our "spot", regardless of which shore we happened to stroll on any given night. Our second date ever was at North Bar in Empire and because of the waves, I exposed a little more than I meant to that night. (His story goes a little differently. Interesting.)

We walked down the length of the beach as long as we could--past the houses at Indiana Woods--and talked about our plans for the long summer ahead, which included, among other things, several more trips to the beach together.

Good Harbor. Fully immersed at 8:06 p.m.

After visiting a new beach every day for the past four days, coming back to Good Harbor tonight was a little like coming home.

Monday, June 4th 2012

Public access at the end of Bohemian Road (Co. Rd. 669).  Fully immersed at 7:00 p.m.

The first "swims" of 2012 have been more like "hold-your-breath-dunk-and-run-back-to-your-towel" than anything else.  Today was the first day that I wanted to actually swim.  Now it feels like summer.

Sunday, June 3rd 2012

Peterson Park, Northport.  Fully immersed at 1:48 p.m.

This was the first time in my life I had ever (EVER!) been to Peterson Park...and it's my new favorite.  The beach isn't a beachy one (too many rocks for sunbathing), but the lookout is one of the most spectacular views in the county.  I immediately made a mental note to come back next Sunday with my husband and a picnic.

Saturday, June 2nd 2012

Private beach at Cherry Homes, Northport. Fully immersed at 8:04 pm.

Spending the weekend with two of my best friends, roommates from college. It's an annual tradition--the first weekend in June, we stay at The Cottage. There's no schedule, no kids, no phones, no work. Kind of like heaven. On a lake. With naps.

Friday, June 1st 2012

North Beach, Leland.  Fully immersed at 8:22 p.m.

"The sea was angry that day, my friends...."

What was I thinking?!?  Tonight's swim was brutal.  Not for the faint of heart.

Thursday, May 31st 2012 (evening)

Good Harbor Beach.  Fully immersed at 7:14 pm.

After an extremely hard day at work, all it took was driving into the beach's parking lot to dial back my stress level about ten notches.

 Much better.

Thursday, May 31st 2012 (morning)

No swim yet today, just a fresh perspective on another beach.
