Good Harbor. Fully immersed at 9:35 p.m.

I don't think I'm imagining it--the water is definitely getting colder!

Empire Beach.  Fully immersed at 9:26 p.m.

Tonight I enjoyed the rare treat of having my once-a-year dinner with two of my favorite friends, Megan and Michael, at the Friendly Tavern.  They relax for a week every summer at her parents' cottage on Bear Lake and it's tradition to spend at least one night catching up over a pitcher of Meg's favorite beer.  I was the only one to bring my suit, but we all walked down to the beach together to snap a few photos of the sunset's bounce.

What is it about your friends--your really good friends--that makes spending one evening with them, as fun as those few hours might be, seem like you're being cheated out of a day-to-day life that could be?  A life with the really cool people that actually get you?  When I'm with them (and several of my other college friends that I see for a few hours every year), I imagine that this is just one of many Monday nights in which we grab some burgers and a couple beers at our local bar and jaw about work and families and recent engagements (!)--here or in NYC or LA or wherever--but it's never hard to say goodbye at the end of the night because we'll be doing all of it again next week.

Did I mention I'm getting ready to cash in my credit card miles for a plane ticket this fall?!?

Good Harbor.  Fully immersed at 5:56 p.m.

Today's swim was everything an early evening stop at your hometown beach is supposed to be.  A little quieter than usual (daytrippers heading home for dinner, I'm sure), this was a waterfront peppered with locals.  I ran into several friends (Pam & Steve, Katherine & Jason, Patty, Angela & Marco) and a quick dip in the water became an hour and a half affair.  We all talked about work and their kids and how we're feeling more than a little sad about the thought of summer's end.  Too soon!  Of course we all cast our vote for a nice, long Indian summer while we were at it....

A much calmer evening!  Good to see a bit of the sunset, too....or at least some of the afterglow.

[No photo today.  My hands were shaking too badly.]

Good Harbor.  Up to my waist at 10:25 p.m.

Today was a first.  I made it to the beach tonight, but I didn't actually get my head wet.  Not because I was too tired or it was too cold or I forgot my suit.

I respect the Big Water too much.  And my own life.

The rip tide, a phenomenon I had always likened to something of an urban legend, is a very real thing.  It was so dark tonight and the waves were so loud and because I was by myself, I was terrified to take my normal swim.  I don't know why I was so unnerved, but I really couldn't ignore my heart rate.  Or the fact that I was sweating.  And shaking.  I've only felt this feeling one other time in my life--the very real sense that I might be experiencing the last few moments of my life--and I was lucky enough to have eluded my mortality (and a very bad accident) then.  I truly wasn't sure if I jumped into those waves headfirst, I would tonight.

So.  It was a half-swim.  Still counts, in my mind--I wanted to be here to experience the rest of season.

Good Harbor.  Fully immersed at 11:24 p.m.

Ack!  The corn harvest is really cutting into my swim time.....hence the black photo.  Sorry guys for the less-than-lovely documentation--please know I am still swimming every single day!

Good Harbor.  Fully immersed at 9:37 p.m.

The air was cooler than the lake--a phenomenon I've noticed is happening quite often lately.  Back in May when I started this project, I would have never thought that to be the case!  From 50 degree water temps to 78....wow.

Antique cars, a gazebo and Boy Scouts.  Hello, Americana!

A park on a lake?  No biggie.

Big Glen, Little Glen and Lake Michigan in the background.

The old cannery at Glen Haven.

Glen Haven, by way of the annual Old Settlers Community Picnic and Inspiration Point. Fully immersed at 3:54 p.m.

A few months ago, one of my childhood neighbors called me to ask if I'd demonstrate wool spinning at the 120th Old Settlers Community Picnic this past Sunday.  He was thrilled that I said yes (a Sunday afternoon in a park on Glen Lake?  Of course!), claiming that it'd be especially fitting if I came, seeing as I was a "native Burdickvillian."

After the picnic, I headed up to Inspiration Point, about two miles from the park.  Inspiring?  Doesn't even come close.  Breathtaking, exquisite, magnificient....maybe.  It's always suprising to me, especially when I visit a place that was once so familiar to me, how visually striking my hometown is.  And how commonplace I once thought it was.

Sunday really was a blast from the past, as this part of Leelanau County truly shaped the first half of my life.  As a member of our high school cross country (and track) teams, Old Settlers was just one leg of the road course for our nightly runs.  It's also where we held our 10-year high school reunion.  My first high school boyfriend's grandparents had a boat launch on that side of Glen Lake and we took their pontoon out as often as we could.  (So there may have been a few makeout sessions under that boat.....)  Every Easter, our church held its sunrise service at the lookout.  We took my favorite wedding photo there, too.

I hadn't been to Glen Haven so far this year--with a free afternoon on my hands, it was the obvious choice.  I was so tired at the end of the week, I did something I almost never do--fell asleep on the beach.  I remembered, of course, to apply sunscreen beforehand.  Heavenly.

End of Co. Rd. 669 (Bad Harbor). Fully immersed at 8:46 p.m.

I seem to always hit Bad Harbor right before a storm, although as it turns out, we never even got a drop of rain. I love coming down here--it's so, so much less crowded than Good Harbor.

Good Harbor.  Fully immersed at 10:26 p.m.

Between sweet corn, my full time job, trying to keep my house from perpetually looking like a bomb went off under the kitchen table tidy and putting a little food by (peach-apricot butter and apricot jam from some very, very rare apricots I scored from Old Mission peninsula yesterday), it has become increasingly harder to make time for a swim before lights out.  Or at least, while there's still daylight.  A photographer I am not, but the moonlight was so bright last night, you could at least make out the treeline in this iPhone photo.

The last day of July--pretty hard to believe.  Loved watching tonight's sunset...and anxious to see what the next month will bring.

Good Harbor.  Fully immersed at 9:21 p.m.

My fastest swim to date.  And maybe the most foolish?  I was in and out within 45 seconds.  I couldn't capture it with my phone, but there was one heck of a storm going on at Pyramid Point.  We drove home quickly and enjoyed the sounds of the storm from the safety of our bedroom.

Good Harbor.  Fully immersed at 2:12, 3:58, 5:25, 6:47 and 7:28 p.m.

I spent a full beach day with a few of my very best friends, celebrating a special birthday.  After a birthday brunch at the Riv (one of my favorite county restaurants), we picked up a few creature comforts at the store and headed down to the water--with a few borrowed SUPs in tow.  Just the thing I needed to finish out a busy weekend.

Good Harbor. Fully immersed at 11:56 p.m.

Closest call yet. My husband and I are smack in the middle of sweet corn season and in an effort to get him ready for the Sara Hardy farmer's market and fulfill our obligations with our other vendors, we picked 160 dozen before work today and 260 dozen after work.  Whew.  But dang if I wasn't going to jump in Big Blue before the day was out, even though that meant swimming in the dark.

Interested in purchasing some of Curt's Corn?  Right now you can find it at Cedar Sol Hydro Farm in Cedar, Anderson's Market in Glen Arbor, Sonny's farm stand on M-22 (south of Leland), Price's farm stand on M-204, NJ's Grocery in Lake Leelanau, Hansen Foods in Suttons Bay, Buzzy's farm stand on M-72 and a little farm stand on French Road, next door to our house.

Good Harbor. Fully immersed at 9:38 p.m.

Time constraints have bound me to Good Harbor this week, as has road construction in Leland. I plan on more travel next week--I'm in need of a(nother) beautiful view.
